After many years of practice, painting values using analog lead pencils — and in the need of painting rather hasty concepts — I tried painting values using digital brushes (Photoshop, Corel Painter) and it worked! Multiplying shadows and occlusion layers, screen or add blend mode for speculars and overlay for tones, just like compositing nodes in Nuke.
